Abstract:
Examines the conflict that erupted in 1915-16 within the Federation of German Women's Organizations (Bund deutscher Frauenvereine) between the General German Women's Association (ADF) and the Jewish Women's League (JFB). In her speech on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the ADF, Helen Lange did not mention that the JFB was a member of the Federation. A prolonged correspondence between the ADF and JFB followed. Argues that this conflict was more than just a personal clash between Lange and Bertha Pappenheim of the JFB. The Federation pursued a policy of homogeneity in the women's movement in Germany; this homogeneity was presented as confessionally neutral, but was in fact interpreted as based on Christianity. The JFB was seen by the Federation leadership as violating the movement's cultural unity. Concludes that underlying this conflict was the BDF's resentment of the visibility of Jewish women in the movement. Compares the conflict within the women's movement in 1915-16 to a similar conflict in 1904-5.
