Abstract:
Traces changes in Catholic religious instruction concerning Jews and Judaism in German schools, from 1945 to the present. Even after the Holocaust, teaching and liturgy continued to transmit the traditional dogmas, such as the Jews' rejection of Christ and their subsequent sufferings as God's punishment; or the Old Testament as merely a forerunner of the New. This changed only after "Nostra aetate". The negative images of Judaism were overcome and the Jewish roots of Christianity stressed. Moreover, Judaism was no longer treated only in connection with Christianity but as a living religion important in itself. An effort was made to learn about Jewish life and culture and to get to know contemporary Jews. Warns against allowing social problems affecting education, and religious education in particular, in recent years to sideline teaching about Judaism.
