Abstract:
In 1944, four sub-camps of Auschwitz were established as Gleiwitz I-IV, where prisoners, mainly Jews, were sent to work in various factories. These labor camps were all managed from the camp command center in Monowitz. On 18-19 January 1945, all of the prisoners were evacuated and the barracks became a stopover for prisoners from Auschwitz and other sub-camps; there, a selection took place before those deemed fit were marched to the west. Thus, the prisoners from all over Upper Silesia and the Dąbrowa Górnicza region were driven to Gliwice. Presents a short history of the Gliwice sub-camps, and the episodes of the death marches connected with Gliwice and the surrounding area. Many prisoners died during the death march.
