Abstract:
Toller’s play "Die Wandlung" (“Transfomation”) opens with a dialogue between War Dead and Peace Dead. The main character, Friedrich, a young sculptor, identifies himself with a Wandering Jew. Toller himself suffered physical and mental hardships during World War I; the hardships of war are woven into the experiences of the soldier. The war is depicted with absurdity and dark humor. When the war is over, he begins a process of spiritual rebirth which leads him toward a commitment to revolutionary principles of freedom and political action, which is what Toller did after the war.
