Abstract:
The Austrian refugees, most of them Jews, in the communist resistance in France and Belgium (MOI) were organized in the Travail Allemand, whose main task was to undermine German and Austrian soldiers' will to fight for the Nazis. They issued and distributed newspapers and leaflets aimed at the soldiers, emphasizing mainly the suffering on the home front. Young women, posing as French, sought contact with Austrian soldiers and tried to win them over. Many were caught, either in this work or when they returned to Austria to organize the resistance there; they were questioned under torture and then sent to concentration camps. Tells the stories of many of these women, who saw themselves as working for the end of fascism and for Austrian freedom; the Holocaust and the fate of their families played almost no part in their decision.
