Abstract:
The virtual ban on performing Wagner's music in Palestine was triggered by the "Kristallnacht" pogrom in Germany in 1938. Many factors combined together to turn Wagner into the epitome of all that Palestinian Jews rejected in German culture: Wagner's antisemitism, the Nazi leaders' adulation of him, Nazi appropriation of the Bayreuth festival, etc. Traces discussions in the Israeli press about lifting the ban on Wagner's music, appearing from 1952 on. Interestingly enough, while the ban on musicians who supported the Nazis (e.g. Richard Strauss, Carl Orff) has been lifted in Israel, the ban on Wagner, who died half a century before the Nazi accession to power, remains.
