Abstract:
Sperber grew up in a traditional Jewish milieu, but in his youth he loosened his ties with Judaism in favor of a universalist socialism. The Holocaust (which, after a flight through Czechoslovakia and France, he survived in Switzerland) caused him to return to his Jewish identity and his solidarity with the fate of the Jewish people. In "Der Churban oder die unfassbare Gewissheit", a collection of essays published in 1979, he deals with Jewish themes, including a psychological interpretation of antisemitism, and with the Holocaust. In the third section, "Wolyna" (published separately, first in French, 1952), of the third volume of his fictional trilogy "Wie eine Träne im Ozean" he tells the story of a town very similar to his own hometown Zablotów, and its destruction in the Holocaust.
