Abstract:
Argues that Shylock should be viewed in the context of the other characters in Shakespeare's play, all of whom are extremely flawed; they treat him as an outsider and abuse him as an alien who questions their values. Shylock restrains himself until the "tragic moment" when his daughter betrays him and joins forces with his oppressors. Attributes his consequent desire for revenge to the historical accumulation of Jewish resentment capped by the apostasy of his daughter, who denies her parents a Jewish future. Shakespeare is praised for illuminating attitudes that reflect Christian stereotyping of the Jew.
