Abstract:
Examines Hegel's ideas on Judaism and the "Jewish question" in the context of his conception of history and the relationship between ecclesiastical and political authority. Notes that his views underwent a considerable change. The earliest works expressed a typical Enlightenment negative view of Judaism, while later writings (especially "Philosophy of History") situated Judaism within the dialectic of world cultures. Consistent with his liberalism and affinity for Protestant Christianity, Hegel supported equal rights for Jews which ensure their assimilation. States that the Nazi period and the Holocaust marked the end of Hegel's world of enlightened liberal Protestantism and invalidated his conception of progress in history.
