Abstract:
Since the 1960s, the Holocaust has become the master-narrative of World War II, as seen in films (documentary and fictional), novels, plays, popular histories, television programs, museums, and other sources in the public sphere. Counter-narratives have arisen, which take different forms, some better and some worse, e.g. memorialization, trivialization, saturation, misuse of the Holocaust story. Discusses two narratives which lie in the gray zone of popular culture: one developed in the United States soon after the war, and may be called "the Romance of the Wehrmacht" - the enemy became the Soviet Union and the Germans became America's friends and allies. The second phenomenon began more recently in Germany and spread to the U.S. propagating the view of Germans as victims of the war, which is seen in war memoirs written by German soldiers and civilians, as well as glorification of the German army in games and Internet websites.
