Abstract:
Hersey's novel, published in 1950, was the first major English-language novel of the Holocaust. It dealt with the Jews in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation - the persecution, ghettoization, the uprising, and the destruction of the ghetto, focusing on the experiences of a specific family. Gauges the public's grateful reaction to "The Wall" through analysis of scores of letters sent to Hersey, but also examines the American English-language and Yiddish-language press's criticism of the novel. Contends that the average American reader read and understood "The Wall" as an ethnographic handbook of Jewish ritual and religious behavior as much as a text about active Jewish resistance to the Nazis.
