Abstract: Shows that the holdings of the ITS archives are a resource for study of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe as well, presenting the case of the camp that the Romanian occupation established at Vapniarka in Transnistria in October 1941. Most of the inmates were Jews brought from Romania and from Odessa. Many of them died of typhus or malnutrition; others were shot and killed nearby. The camp was liquidated in October 1943; most of the prisoners were sent to another Romanian camp.

Abstract: Until the end of 2007, ITS was the largest collection of inaccessible records any where that shed light on the fates of people from across Europe - Jews of course, and members of virtually every other nationality as well - who were arrested, deported, sent to concentration camps, and even murdered by the Nazis; who were put to forced and slave labour under inhuman conditions, calculated in many places to result in death; and who were displaced from their homes and families, and unable to return home at war's end. These were documents that Allied forces collected as they liberated camps and forced labour sites across Europe in the last months of the war and during their post-war occupation and administration of Germany and Austria. The archives of the International Tracing Service in Bad Arolsen, Germany, contains over 50 million World War II era documents relating to the fates of over 17.5 million people. Using samples and case studies, the author, who led the campaign to open the archives, provides an insider's view of the years-long effort to open the collections for research and discuss the importance of this recent event for Holocaust survivors, other victims of National Socialism, and scholars.

Abstract: "The Kishinev Ghetto, 1941-1942 offers a wealth of primary sources and insightful commentary about the little-known slaughter of Jewish residents of Kishinev (Chisinau) under the military occupation of Romania by Marshal Ion Antonescu, a Hitler ally"--
Abstract: "The Kishinev Ghetto, 1941-1942 sheds new light on the little-known historical events surrounding the creation, administration, and liquidation of the Kishinev (Chisinau) ghetto during the first months following the Axis attack on the Soviet Union (Operation Barbarossa) in late June 1941. Mass killings during the combined Romanian-German drive toward Kishinev in Bessarabia, after a year of Soviet rule in this Romanian border province, were followed by the shooting of thousands of Jews on the streets of the city during the first days of reestablished Romanian administration. Survivors were driven into a ghetto, persecuted, and liquidated by year's end. The Kishinev Ghetto, 1941-1942 is the first major study of these events. Often overshadowed by events in Germany and Poland, the history of the Holocaust in Romania, including what took place in Bessarabia (corresponding in large part with the territory of the modern Republic of Moldova), was obscured during decades of communist rule, denial, and policies that blocked access to wartime documentation. This book is the result of a lengthy research project that began with Paul A. Shapiro's travels to Romania for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to negotiate access to these documents."--
