Abstract:
The Silver Shirt movement was founded by William Dudley Pelley in January 1933 as the Silver Legion of America, and was dedicated to fight communism, remove all Jews from public office, and establish a Christian commonwealth. Although it was a national organization, which at its peak probably numbered 15,000 members, its strongest concentration of members lay on the West Coast. The federal government investigated the organization's activities. In San Diego, the activities involved public meetings and antisemitic propaganda expounded in their weekly paper "The Broom". In 1933 Jews from San Diego and Los Angeles formed the American Jewish Society to monitor and counteract Silver Shirt activities. Many Christians united with the Jews against the Silver Shirts. This may have caused the San Diego Silver Shirts to limit their activities to words; no acts of violence were committed against the Jewish community.
