Abstract:
Dwells on the limited understanding and reactions of officials and institutions, during the Holocaust, to the information received from the occupied countries, as reflected in the correspondence between Nathan Schwalb, the Hehalutz representative in Geneva, and Hehalutz members in Nazi-occupied Poland between 1940-43. Schwalb became the main and central link between Poland and the Palestine-based Hehalutz institutions. He saw himself as the representative of the Hehalutz groups in Poland, and was dedicated to ensuring their survival by conveying their messages in detail, as well as struggling for material aid. However, Schwalb's interpretation of the information conveyed to him was tainted by prewar ideological and spiritual bonds which became an obstacle in his efforts. The focus on ideological issues of common interest interfered with the efforts to convey and interpret the full meaning of the encoded information about the extent of the Holocaust.
