Abstract:
Many Jews were shareholders of the Berlin zoo, not so much as a financial investment but because of their love for the zoo, which some of them visited almost daily. Jews were also among the most active board members. In 1933, Nazi pressure on the board forced them to resign. Shares held by Jews were frozen, and in the late 1930s the Jewish shareholders were forced to sell them. After the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, Jews were denied entry to the zoo.
