Kurzfassung:
Discusses the playing of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at Mauthausen on 7 May 2000, on the 55th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp, arguing that it was an inappropriate commemoration. The Vienna Symphony, which was a Nazi cultural icon, was not the right orchestra, nor was the piece, which includes the text of Schiller's "Ode to Joy", the right music. The music was more appropriate for a celebration. The slaughterhouse should not have been, even temporarily, overshadowed by a concert house. Places the incident in the context of Austrian rejection of responsibility for the Holocaust.
Anmerkung:
On the concert held in May 2000 at Mauthausen marking the 55th anniversary of the liberation of the camp.
