Abstract:
Reflects on recurring themes in Patrick Modiano's novels. Argues that the occupation in the background of his own biography (he was born in 1945), the instability of his parents' relationship, and his abandonment by his father have led him to explore the time of the Shoah in Paris, memory and loss. Concludes that Modiano, like Proust, longs for the curiosity and strength of imagination of childhood, but knows that all attempts to bring back memory are "too late".
