Abstract:
Relates the life story of a victim of the Holocaust, the German Jewish artist Felix Nussbaum (Osnabrück, 1904-Auschwitz, 1944) and discusses the reflection of his Holocaust experiences in his paintings. Nussbaum emigrated to Belgium in 1935 and settled in Brussels. After escaping from the Saint-Cyprien camp in France (where the Nazis had sent him in 1940), he lived in hiding, mainly in Brussels, until his arrest in July 1944. He was deported to Auschwitz, where he perished. 150 of his works were destroyed in 1932 by followers of the Nazi party in Germany. He left other works with a Belgian dentist imploring him to exhibit them; they were recently exhibited in Jerusalem.
