Abstract:
Discusses the presentation of the Holocaust in Italian literature for children and youth (both original and translated), comparing it with the presentation of Italian resistance activities during World War II. The Holocaust is dissociated from Italy, from World War II, from the German nation, as well as from horrors and active reaction to oppression; it is blamed on the Nazis and related to a passive reaction to events of the war. Resistance activities and active stances are characterized as typical of the Italian attitude toward fascism and Nazism. The historical and didactic messages are conveyed by manipulation of the facts and through a choice of language in order to transmit spiritual, national, and moral values cherished by the social and ideological ruling powers in postwar Italy.
