Abstract:
Based on a survey done in 1981-82 of 89 former inmates of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, examines the phenomenon of "musulmen" - men and women in the extreme phase of starvation and in a psychological state resembling catatonia. Analyzes the source of the term, the appearance of the "musulman", his or her mental state, the feeling of extreme hunger, attitudes of other prisoners towards "musulmen", and psychological effects on survivors of this state.
