Abstract:
Notes the shift in Rozanov's views on the Jews through the prism of his views on the complex psychology and sexual identity of Gogol. Rozanov moved from an attitude of love to hatred for Judaism, which he ultimately demonized. With his biological mysticism, Rozanov found in Gogol's portrayal of the Jew and in Judaism itself a predilection for taboos, an inherent criminality, and a tendency toward sexual perversion (e.g. incest). During the Beilis case, Rozanov expressed belief in the truth of the blood libel. He concluded that the role of Jews in Russian literature and in Russian political life was destructive; he was fixated on the Jewish body and on blood. However, after the Revolution Rozanov returned to a positive view of both the Jews and Gogol.
Note:
Deals with Rozanov's thought on Gogol's sexuality and on Jewish sexuality.
