Abstract:
Analyzes the novel "Psalom" by the Russian Jewish writer Fridrikh Gorenshtein, now residing in Germany. The novel portrays 20th-century Russian history in allegorical form and as a contest between two forces, one of which may be identified with the Jews. Shows that the author's concept of Jews as dangerous outsiders and of their role in Russian history is greatly influenced by Shafarevich's "Russophobia"; he also uses some racist anti-Jewish stereotypes. Gorenshtein identifies with the "Russian" side of the "historical contest"; he has internalized the Russian stereotype of the Jew as a paradigmatic "Other."
