Abstract:
Discusses the dilemma in any attempt at authentic representation of the Holocaust, and shows Spiegelman's frequent reflections on this dilemma in "Maus". He deals with it by various artistic devices, but above all by breaking the conventional ideal representation through individuation and detail and through the very choice of a genre usually considered lowbrow, but which here provokes a serious and many-dimensioned response.
