Abstract:
Relates the popularity of Binjamin Wilkomirski's imaginary memoir to the unease prevailing in Switzerland at the time of its publication because of revelations of the country's role in the Holocaust (of which the coldness with which Wilkomirski's adoptive parents reacted to his story seemed symbolic); to the growing worldwide interest in the Holocaust, accompanied by commercialization; and to the trend to prefer Hollywood's treatment of the subject to the authentic narratives of survivors.
