Abstract:
Contends that Chaucer was a poet of humanity and compassion, and it is wrong to accuse him of antisemitism. Anti-Jewish statements made by characters in his works reflect contemporary attitudes, not necessarily his own. Quotes sources from 14th-century England which show that various theologians and poets (e.g. William Langland0 preached tolerance toward the Jews. Chaucer knew these people, and probably held the same views.
