Abstract:
Traces the fate of faculty members of the University of Vienna and other academic institutions who were dismissed for racial or political reasons after the Nazi takeover (and sometimes before it), and who went into exile, committed suicide, or died in concentration camps. After the war they were a part of the history the Austrians endeavored to forget. Their places were often taken by Nazis, who stayed on after 1945. The Jewish scholars were not invited back. Concludes that their absence is felt to this day.
