Abstract:
Compares racial theories formulated by Disraeli in his novels with theories of Sigmund Freud. Both claimed that the world was governed by hidden powers. Disraeli exalted the pure, indestructible "Hebrew race" which "has a vast influence on the affairs of Europe". The belief in a Jewish conspiracy is much older than Disraeli, but he contributed to its credibility and helped to spread it. Traces use of the myth by antisemitic writers and popular novelists. The semi-conspiratorial nature of early psychoanalysis, together with Freud's sense of personal and national injury, led opponents to charge Freudians with a similar conspiracy to undermine Western civilization.
