Abstract:
Explains the importance of the Hungarian Numerus Clausus Law as the first instance of antisemitism as official state policy in the 20th century. Discusses its historical roots and provides data by the National Bureau of Statistics from 1920 about the number of civil servants involved. Quotes from the views of the Minister of Education and right-wing and liberal MPs at the time. Presents contradictory statements by Prime Minister Teleki about Jews on different occasions, as dictated by his political interests. Deals with the execution of the law and quotes from the Jewish press about violent attacks against Jews in 1920-21. Explains the Holocaust of Hungarian Jews by the antisemitism of the Hungarian political elite during Horthy's regime. The texts of the Numerus Clausus Law and a similar decree by the Minister of Education are appended.
