Abstract:
Discusses the attitudes of exiled German intellectuals in the U.S. (e.g. Thomas Mann, Theodor Adorno) toward the antisemitism of Richard Wagner. They tended to minimize the contribution of Wagner's antisemitism to Nazi ideology. Some of them even argued that the so-called direct line leading from Wagner's views to Nazism was an invention of Nazi propaganda, and that Wagner's antisemitism was a marginal and unimportant aspect of his work.
