Abstract:
Using as case studies Roger Peyrefitte's "Les Juifs" and Jean-François Steiner's "Treblinka", which appeared in the mid-1960s in France, argues that context-bound function complicates the issue of continuity in regard to antisemitism. Both works can be said to "flirt" with antisemitism, since they deal with topics like anti-Jewish stereotypes, e.g. Jewish sexuality and passivity. Nevertheless, both authors claimed that their works were philosemitic in that they were disputing the stereotypes. Points out that these border-line books, between antisemitism and philosemitism, spurred early interest in Holocaust memory in France. Cites the example of Pierre Vidal-Naquet, whose reaction to Steiner's book led to Vidal-Naquet's later concern with Holocaust memory and Holocaust denial.
