Abstract:
Surveys the content of the flourishing Hebrew literature in Palestine during the 1930s and shows how the dramatic events unfolding in Europe were reflected in the poetry and prose published in that period, noting, however, that no novels were written at that time about the rise of Nazism. Compares the works of various writers, products of the two waves of immigration from Eastern Europe in the early 20th century. Emphasizes the role of the poets, particularly Natan Alterman, whose criticism of the growth of fascism plays a prominent role in his works. Precisely because these literary figures were of European origin, one would have expected a more aggressive reaction to Nazism expressed in their works.
