Abstract:
Based on a lecture held at the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien in Heidelberg, January 1998. Discusses the evidence for Heidegger's identification with Nazi antisemitism, especially in the negative opinions he submitted on Jewish candidates for university positions. As early as 1929, he added to his recommendation of a certain (non-Jewish) candidate the warning that German intellectual life must be preserved from "Verjudung". His phraseology, even when he did not expressly mention a candidate's Jewish origin, betrayed his antisemitism. With a few exceptions, he had no sympathy for the Jewish scholars dismissed, under Nazi law, during his rectorship at the University of Freiburg, and distanced himself from his teacher Husserl. Both Husserl and Jaspers judged him antisemitic. After the war he refused to admit guilt.
