    Abstract: The verbs נִשְׁקַף and הִשְׁקִיף are usually both rendered into English as “to look down,” with no apparent difference in meaning despite their occurrence in the niphal and the hiphil, respectively. However, there seems to be a clear pattern in the choice between the two binyanim, which is determined by the gender of the person described. The author’s selection of either stem may give us a glimpse into the Weltanschauung of the biblical writers and their perception of how men and women acted in society and on the stage of life. In one interesting instance regarding queen Jezebel (2 Kgs 9:30), the regular linguistic pattern is reversed to further emphasise the stark contrast between her character and the usual way in which female characters are described in the Hebrew Bible. Paying attention to the general pattern also gives additional evidence in the question of the identity of the speaker in Prov 7:6.

    Abstract: In this study I discuss the meaning of the preposition בֵּין from a diachronic perspective. While in Classical Biblical Hebrew (CBH) the preposition always means 'between' (with a single possible exception), from the time of the exile onwards it also takes on the meaning of 'among', probably under the influence of Aramaic and because of the disappearance of the composite preposition בְּקֶרֶב, which led to the reconfiguration of the use of prepositions such as בֵּין and בְּתוֹךְ. Both meanings ‘between’ and ‘among’ for the preposition בֵּין are known and reported in various lexica and reference grammars, yet they have never been considered and explained from a diachronic standpoint.

    Abstract: The article discusses the translation and meaning of LXX Prov 25,4-5. These verses seem to be often misunderstood in modern translations, which tend to convey the meaning contained in the Hebrew text rather than that of the Greek version. What I propose is that the Greek translation does not refer to metallurgy and the refining of silver, as in the Hebrew source. The translator changes the meaning of the proverb and substitutes the image of minting coins for smelting silver (correctly rendered in a minority of modern translations and studies). The new teaching of LXX Proverbs with regards to money perfectly fits the Ptolemaic social and economic context and constitutes a further element to understand the outlook on kingship and on the duties of the Lagid king in Hellenistic Alexandria.
