Abstract:
Discusses the recent (since the mid-1970s) and continuing proliferation of Jewish museums and exhibits in German cities (Berlin, Frankfurt, Essen, Augsburg, and Worms) and many small towns and villages. These museums and exhibits serve to shape the German collective memory. Suggests that their main purpose is to gain for Germans the right to be recognized as moral beings. In a sense, these museums and exhibits may serve to enhance rather than prevent forgetting by Germans of the Holocaust, because they tell the story of Jews who existed in Germany's distant past, not the story of Jews who were expelled and annihilated.
