Kurzfassung:
The first antisemitic persecutions in Germany in 1933 and after, apparently "spontaneous" attacks on Jews and Jewish businesses, were organized by the SA. Most of the population reacted with indifference, sometimes even demonstrating sympathy towards Jews. The boycott of Jewish businesses caused serious damage to the economy. Gestapo reports show that the population disliked anti-Jewish demonstrations (although there was no open protest), and considered the "Stürmer" as pornographic. However, they approved of the anti-Jewish policy. Describes the "Kristallnacht" pogrom in Rhineland-Westphalia. From 1939 on, despite the increase in persecutions, the majority of the population remained indifferent; reports about concentration camps were considered to be exaggerated. Mentions the silence of the Church and the collaboration of the administration in the deportation of the Jews. Accompanied by photographs (pp. 422-426) and numerous documents (pp. 427-485).
