Abstract:
A socio-psychological analysis of the relations between pro-Dreyfus and anti-Dreyfus partisans as portrayed in the novels of Marcel Proust. Proust, himself a passionate supporter of Dreyfus, saw the case as a confirmation of his belief that society is constantly generating majority and minority groups and that the minority, as a dissenting group, must necessarily be seen as guilty. His characters' pro- or anti-Dreyfus stance is determined by their social position. The adoption of nationalism and antisemitism sometimes allowed people of lower-class origins to be accepted in society.
