Abstract:
Kadia Molodowsky left Eastern Europe for America in 1935, aged 41, after publishing three volumes of Yiddish poetry. Active in Yiddish literary circles, when news of the extent of the Holocaust began to reach the USA she devoted herself entirely to writing a collection of poems entitled "Der Melekh Dovid aleyn iz gebliben" [King David Alone Has Survived] (1946). Analyzes four poems dealing with her reactions to the Holocaust. Identifies two significant approaches: the traditional sacred parody, in which Molodowsky uses the form and rhetoric of prayer (symbolizing continuity) to undermine the divine covenant with Israel; and "poems of unravelling, " in which she expresses both the inability of language to express the tragedy and the destruction of the Yiddish literary milieu. Concludes that the poems of unravelling are part of the sacred parody genre, since Molodowsky continued to use Yiddish poetry to express her crisis of faith in the face of the Holocaust.
