Abstract:
Kirchhoff, like Walser, wrote a novel in which he takes revenge on Marcel Reich-Ranicki for the latter's devastating criticism of his previous work. His "Schundroman" and Walser's "Tod eines Kritikers" appeared at about the same time (2001). Unlike Walser, Kirchhoff does not mention the Jewish identity of the critic. But in an article discussing the scandal caused by Walser's book, he asserts that for the first time it made him understand what it could have been like for a Holocaust victim "to have to consider his every word, every tiny step", just as does anyone who dares to participate today in the antisemitism debate. Comments that with such a perverse view, Kirchhoff was well advised not to portray his critic as recognizably Jewish.
