Abstract:
Catholic leaders and Vatican spokesmen have cited various political, social, and humanitarian problems presenting obstacles to Vatican recognition of the State of Israel (e.g., the status of the Holy Places, the problem of the Arab Christians, etc.). However, the Vatican made clear its opposition to Zionism on theological grounds from the beginning of Zionist activity, when these problems did not exist, as shown by quotations from Herzl's diaries. In January 1904, Piux X told Herzl that the Vatican could not consent to Jewish possession of the Holy Land as long as the Jews rejected Christ's divinity. Later contacts with the Vatican resulted in expressions of sympathy for the Jewish colonization effort, but reservations about a Jewish state. This attitude persists and has proved a hindrance to Catholic-Jewish dialogue.
