Abstract:
When the Jewish cemetery in Carpentras was desecrated in 1990, the event was widely publicized by the mass media, and a massive wave of protest arose throughout France. However, some politicians and journalists suspected that the incident was blown up by the leftist and pro-government media to discredit the Front National and Le Pen, whose popularity was then rising. Rightists undertook counter-demonstrations, which were followed by other similar incidents. Sociologist Paul Yonnet published (in the leftist journal "Le Debat") an article blaming the media for manipulation of facts and provocation aiming to cleanse the French political scene of Le Pen. Stresses, however, that the public incitement against the FN was not instigated by the media, but ripened long before, following the rise of FN activities and strengthening of its positions; thus, Yonnet's conclusions are only partially true.
