Abstract:
Christian-Jewish religious disputations are reflected in medieval German plays. A comparison of two Frankfurt passion plays with two dramatic works by Hans Folz of Nürnberg reveals the impact of local social conditions on attitudes toward such interfaith disputes between lay people. Despite offical Church condemnation of such debates, local conditions sometimes determined whether the official condemnation would be accepted or not. Unlike the passion plays, Folz's works were more benign (less stereotyped) in treating Jews and dealt with real theological issues.
