Abstract:
Before the 1980s, most Israeli artists rejected the idea of relating to the Holocaust in their works. One reason for this may be that younger abstract artists viewed the few figurative artists who related to the Holocaust as "out of date". However, there is a constant tension in Israeli art between the local and the universal; Jewish affinity was repressed for many years in a quest for the universal. In addition, Israeli art reflected society's rejection of the Diaspora Jew and of all Jewish subjects. In the 1980s, Israeli artists began to deal with the Holocaust and with Jewish topics. Describes works of some of these artists (e.g. Yocheved Weinfeld, Moshe Gershuni, Osias Hofstatter, Aviva Uri, Haim Maor, Simcha Shirman, Honi ha-me'agel, and Roee Rosen), many of whom are children of Holocaust survivors. States that the treatment of the Holocaust in Israeli art has gained a "legitimacy within the work of the so-called Second Generation".
