Abstract:
The attitude of Salvador de Madariaga, the Spanish intellectual and liberal public figure, toward the Jews was expressed in three ways. As ambassador in Paris in 1933, he refused to issue visas to German Jewish refugees because of the fear that their presence could arouse antisemitism in Spain, although he expressed regret for their plight. While acting as president of the Commission of Minorities of the League of Nations in 1933, some of his proposals to help refugees were partially accepted. On the occasion of the 800th anniversary of Maimonides in 1935 he published condemnations of antisemitism.
