Abstract:
Translation of a lecture held at Seton Hall University, October 1998. Describes the aid given by Luckner to Jews in Nazi Germany, quoting from interviews with her. Luckner traveled from city to city, with only limited backing from the Catholic Caritas organization and Archbishop Gröber of Freiburg, to find out the immediate needs of Jews and possible ways to alleviate their plight: moral and material support, warning of impending danger, using connections abroad to obtain visas, sending parcels to Jews, etc. In March 1943 she was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Ravensbrück. Notes her social consciousness, her keen understanding of the situation and grasp of practical details, and her ability to react swiftly and effectively.
Note:
On her contribution to the rescue of Jews during the Holocaust.
