Abstract:
The prevalence of antisemitic graffiti and jokes about Holocaust victims in West Germany are evidence of the persistence of antisemitism. Many Germans, not only right-wing extremists, respond to the past with repression of guilt, mockery and laughter, and feel no compassion for the Jewish victims. Lists and analyzes seventeen "Auschwitz joke" texts collected since Dundes' previous article on the subject ("Western Folklore" 43, 1983) which illustrate these psychological mechanisms. It is important to report these jokes, despite fears of encouraging antisemitism, in order to prevent the perpetuation of prejudice by folklore.
