    Abstract: Traces the life of Andrian (1886-1977), a career officer who was commander of the 747th infantry regiment of the 707th division in Belarus, a division responsible primarily for fighting against partisans in the rear. The 707th has become notorious for its murder of some 10,000 Jews - the only Wehrmacht unit outside the Balkans to massacre Jews independently of the Einsatzgruppen or police. However, most of these murders were carried out by the other infantry regiment in the division. Andrian, whose views were ambivalent, held that all Jews were Bolsheviks and probable supporters of partisans; therefore, after any terrorist act Jews were to be executed. But he did not permit his troops to participate in mass shootings, and he became more and more critical of fellow commanders who carried out what he saw as atrocities. However, he was blind to the larger program of annihilation of which his own sector was only a part. Comments that the case of Andrian shows the great range of autonomy enjoyed by individual commanders.
