Abstract:
Chronicles briefly the massacre of the Jews of Kiev at Babii Yar on 29-30 September 1941 by Sonderkommando 4a under Paul Blobel, quoting testimony by two participants in the massacre. Discusses, also, the subsequent murder on the same site of many more Jews as well as victims of other nationalities; and the exhumation and burning of the ca. 100,000 corpses in August-September 1943, again under the command of Blobel. Notes that the Soviet authorities prevented any mention of Jews as the main victims; a monument to them was erected only in 1991. Blobel was condemned to death in the war crimes trial against the Einsatzgruppen in Nürnberg in 1948, together with others responsible for the Babii Yar massacre. also discusses the sparsity of literature on the subject in Western languages.
