Abstract:
The opening of the film "Schindler's List" in France in 1993 received enormous coverage in the popular press and triggered passionate polemics. Intellectuals (such as Claude Lanzmann) were opposed to Spielberg's fictionalization of the Holocaust, whereas many journalists praised the film. The negative reaction stems partly from the common French suspicion of Hollywood productions, and from the conviction that the Holocaust belongs exclusively to the realm of European culture. However, there is another aspect to this polemic - the memory of the Holocaust is present in France and is connected with the poignant discussion on the role of France and its collaborationist government during the war.
