Abstract:
Religious rules governing the life cycle of Jewish people concerned children in a special way, putting them in the roles that they would have to perform in adulthood. In traditional Judaism, each stage of life was controlled by specific rules, different for boys and girls. For example, the circumcision of a baby boy already marked the turning point of his life. Generally, adulthood for boys began when they were thirteen, for girls – when they were twelve. But in fact, boys and girls were sometimes treated differently at the age of three. In Orthodox communities, they already wore different clothes to emphasize their future functions and roles in the community.
