Abstract:
Studies the reaction in the Netherlands to the abduction of Edgardo Mortara by agents of the Papal government in 1858. Dutch Catholics - with the exception of S. Lipman, a Catholic journalist converted from Judaism, supported the papal refusal to return the child to his Jewish parents. Dutch Protestants were not concerned with the fate of the Jewish child, and rather saw the case as an opportunity to attack the Catholic Church.
